![]() ![]() I read Stoddard’s version, and via that gateway discovered what all the fuss was about. Stoddard did a supreme service to all of us by simply adapting the work into accessible modern English. The fact is, one of the all-time great masterworks of sustained horror and imaginative vision, was, unfortunately, self-hampered by its author with his choice of writing it in a clunky, pseudo-archaic language. If you’re thinking of maybe reading Stoddard’s version, I must tell you this:ĭO IT. In 2010, James Stoddard (a fantastic fantasy author in his own right) wrote a “translation” into a more modern, readable vernacular. If you’ve at any point heard some rumors, some whispers, some strange buzz about this book by William Hope Hodgson called The Night Land… maybe you’ve heard it is one of the greatest works of horror or dystopian dark fantasy…but you’ve also heard that it’s practically unreadable because of Hodgson’s choice to write it in a very weird prose style…”Penned in 1912, The Night Land is considered by many to be a work of genius, but one written in a difficult, archaic style that readers often find impenetrable.” ![]()

(I’m fine now, thanks for asking, and the scar does, to be fair, look great.) While preparing for major surgery a few years ago, my surgeon, learning that I was a graduate student in English, responded, “Women love their novels!” (Which seemed like a great time to tell him that my sub-specialty was actually medical ethics.) After surgery, pretty much every doctor or nurse I talked to focused on how cleanly the scar would heal, as though I was more interested in the aesthetics of healing than in significant complications of surgery that were not yet managed. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library and the Michael C. The exhibition invites visitors to consider both the form and the content of these sources, which include traditional theological and biblical material as well as musical scores, cityscapes, and poetry. The Materiality of Devotion: From Manuscript to Print provides visitors with the opportunity to explore a variety of objects, texts, and images that supported devotional practices in the medieval and early modern world. Devotion is a fully embodied activity that engages the senses as well as the heart and mind. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can track your delivery by going to AusPost tracking and entering your tracking number - your Order Shipped email will contain this information for each parcel.
